According to the Demography of Russia, demographic features of Russian population, including population density, population growth, educational level, ethnicity, economic status, religious affiliation, health and other aspects of population. Population of Russia is the predominantly urban having 73% of population at 141,903,979 resident in urban. Country has experienced the population loss of 5 million since it peaked shortly after fall of Soviet Union ; now growth of population is near stagnant with overall growth of population of -0.08% in 2008.

 

Russian Area spread at 17 million Square kilometers and is largest area as a country in the world. It is larger than Canada by 7 million square kilometer.

Population density of Russia is bout 9 persons in per square kilometers, which makes it one of most sparsely populated county in world. Population of country is most dense in European part of county that is centering on the Saint Petersburg and Moscow .

 

Higher death rates and lower birth rates reduce the population of Russia at 0.5% annually. Russian that are living in the poverty has halved since economic crisis in country following disintegration of Soviet Union, improving economy had a positive impact on low birth rate of Russia. It rose from the lowest point at 8.27 births as per 1000 people in the year 1999 to rate of 12.1 per 1000 in year 2008.

Government has measure to halt demographic crisis that was key subject of the Putin's in 2006. New study has published in year 2007 that shows, whole rate of population decreasing slowly. It is also estimated that there are cases of abortions, as in year 2004 about 1.6 million women had abortion and about 1.5 million gave birth.

 

Reason behind high abortion was fact that birth of first child could push the family into poverty. Government however took an step to curb and help these crisis have been effecting, and head of Moscow health department have given the recorded figure of abortions in his city as 57,324 to 28,505 between year 2000 and 2006.
